Essential Details To Know Before Finding Katahdins For Sale

By Kenneth Green

Katahdins are a domestic breed of sheep developed in United States which is a result of crossing a few breeds with each other. They select the lambs for further breeding based on flocking instinct, high fertility, meat type conformation and hair coat. These were the first to reach industry standards basing on their carcass quality.

Their popularity in recent years had increased in the country because wool prices are lower now while the shearing cost is higher. This is why farmers who have Katahdins for sale have been in demand from people because adding them to their own farm is becoming more popular. Specially since the breed sheds their coat after the winter so no need to have them sheared instead.

Their hair could be any color because their appearance is not the emphasis but instead their value for the production. This is because of them being raised as lamb meat and not for wool source since this does not grow on them. The ability to shed their coat is helpful as shearing is more expensive compared to its previous cost.

This breed is also resistant against parasites which is a trait they inherited from their ancestral breeds like Saint Croix. Because of this characteristic, it makes them a low cost and highly productive option for commercial shepherds. These animals are also hardy and have the same eating habits as goats useful for keeping weeds and grasses down though they reach for leaves from trees with low branches.

They strip also the bark of whatever deciduous tree that has smooth or immature bark like cedars and pines. Seeing animals climb on top of large bale of hay is common until their age reach a year which makes providing protection for these bales necessary. This is in preventing them from climbing on their top to excrete waste excessively.

If ever you desire to purchase these sheep for starting a farm on your own or just for meat then find farms that sell them. Use online search engines in finding them and have the results filtered to display those who are selling them nearby only. Doing so excludes the ones that do not offer them from your list.

You can also ask for suggestions from your colleagues, relatives and friends, specifically those which bought from them previously. They would be sharing to you their experiences in buying them and if they were satisfied with the animal meant for breeding or food. Knowing these details will be beneficial since it helps in narrowing down the choices possible.

Get to know more the farms by performing some research about their background and acquire some details of their expertise, capabilities and experience. You can visit also review sites and read reviews their customers before have written to share their opinions of them. Reading them lets you get ideas of the quality of these animals and if there were complaints on them.

Inquire about the cost of each sheep although it depends upon the purpose they were bred for. So different prices are there for those meant for meat or breeding. Reserving one is possible when a sheep is pregnant.
