What To Consider When Choosing Wedding Calligraphy For Your Special Day

By Larry Gibson

Once you have made the decision to get married and have set a date and location where things will take place, it will be time to design your invitations and other materials. Wedding calligraphy can be used on all of your printed materials to give them the look and feel that you are trying to achieve. Here are some tips that will help you choose the right lettering style and get the look you want.

Calligraphy is a beautiful art form that has been practiced for thousands of years. Calligraphers use a brush or a specific style of pen to create letters that have both thin and thick strokes. Some styles are plain while others are incredibly elaborate.

If you are wondering what items can benefit from the use of fancy lettering, consider using it on invitations, save the date cards, wedding programs and cards or charts that tell guests where they will be seated at the reception. Using the same type style on each of these items can tie your printed materials together and set a theme. Plainer type styles can give a more relaxed feel whereas fancier styles can give a more formal feel to everything.

In the past, all calligraphy was done by hand. Now, computer programs can recreate many different lettering styles. Individuals who want a uniform look or who may not have a large amount of money to pay a professional may want to choose to have their stationary produced digitally. If you love a hand-made look and are willing to order your invitations and stationary farther in advance you may want to find someone who still practices this art form.

While you may love the look of very ornate letters they can be hard to read. If you want a very classic and timeless look to your stationary you can still achieve it even with a style of lettering that is plainer and less ornate. You may want to try and write out information in a few different type styles and sizes to make sure that you like the way it looks and that you are able to read it easily.

The color of the writing is also very important. While you may want a color of ink that will match your wedding color scheme it may not work well if you are using light, pastel colors. Just as with some type styles, some type colors may hard for your guests to read. You may want to order one of your invitations as a proof to see what the type color will look like before you commit to ordering a large number of invitations.

Finding a calligrapher may be more difficult if you do not live in a large city but you should be able to find several artists on line that you can choose from. Just make sure to look at samples of the work that they have created and, if you are having a large volume of stationary done, that they have experience working on projects with a similar scope as yours.

Because hand lettering can be so expensive, you may end up having your invitations created by a website or graphic designer and then printed out on a computer. This can be an affordable option that will result in you getting your perfect stationary in a timely fashion. If you are not sure which company to work with you may want to speak with recently married couples in order to find out what company they worked with and what their customer experiences were.
