By Ann Davis

The world has many small breeds of dogs and the French Bulldog is among them. The breed resulted from crossing local ratters in the city of Paris and bulldog ancestors. The bulldog ancestors were imported from England from crossing. The existence of this breed in France and England goes back in the 1800s. It has since grown very popular in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. As such, when looking for French Bulldogs for sale Ohio should be the right place to check out.

The French bulldog also goes by the name frenchie in the UK and US. It is said to have descended directly from the dogs of Mollossians. Mollossians was a tribe in ancient Greek. The spread of the breed worldwide was done by Phoenicians. Initially, the dogs were owned by lace workers living in Nottingham. The workers carried their dogs to France following displacement caused by the Industrial Revolution.

The Frenchie became very popular in France and many more were imported from England. By the end of 1860, England had very few frenchies left while their popularity in France continued to grow. The popularity made the dogs to be given a French name. They became fashionable that they were sought by French writers, fashion designers, artists, prostitutes, and society ladies. It was developed a lot to diverge from the original bulldog in appearance and temperament.

According to breed club standards, French bulldogs should have a smooth coat, small to medium structure, and heavy bone. They are supposed to be very active, compactly built, and muscular. The breed standards only accept certain color shades. These color shades are white, fawn, tan, and brindle. Fawn is the most commonly observed color after brindle. Other patterns and colors are rejected by breed clubs.

Breed clubs reject certain colors because the colors usually come linked with certain health conditions that are not usually found in frenchie breed. Such common color is the blue coloration which is usually linked with alopecia of some form. The skin is usually loose and soft and forms wrinkles on the head and shoulders. The coat is always short and moderately brilliant.

Frenchies are excellent companion dogs who need close contact from their owner. Besides a daily walk, they do not need any extensive exercises. Their exercise needs are minimal. When sitting, they tend to spread their legs out, a character that makes them to be referred to as frog dogs or clown dogs. They make suitable pet dogs for individual who reside in apartments because of their calmness.

Barking is very rare in this variety of bulldog. They only bark when they need attention from their owner. It shows affection and patience with the owner, especially small children. Females tend to protect children a lot. They can coexist well with other breeds and pets, but with proper introduction at the beginning.

The life span for the breed has been found to average between 8 and 10 years. They are poor at regulating body temperature because of their bulkiness and compacted airways. Thus, protection should be provided to them against extreme temperature conditions.
