Before deciding on whether this breed of canine is for you, do read on in this article to find out more.

As can be seen from the name, this breed hails from England. It was originally bred for fighting bulls in the arena, a sport which has long since been outlawed. Physically it is a medium sized canine with short legs and a wide compact body. Although many would expect this breed to be violent and tough temperaments, the modern day bulldog is quite different altogether.

Despite its intimidating looks, the breed is considered to be among the gentlest of canine breeds. It has been found to be very affectionate and gentle with children, whilst maintaining its dominating and dependable attitude as a guard dog. The bulldog requires a strong owner who will not allow it to fall into alpha dog behavior. It must be made to feel it is part of a pack and not leading it. It is also not recommended that they be kept with other dogs as they can sometimes become combative.

The breed does very well in small spaces. So if you only have a small apartment or room, then it will not pose so much of a problem. They are quite happy being inactive a majority of the time and do not need open spaces to run around in. Some would term them as the ultimate indoor dog. They should be taken on regular daily walks however to keep their migratory instincts at bay, a trait common to all dogs.

This dog is not for you if you currently living in a hot or tropical climate. This dog has problems in regulating its temperature when it is very hot outside. It is also prone to chills when it is very cold. It is really a breed made for more temperate climes.

When choosing this breed, you will not be left wanting in the medical complications department. The breed has its share of skin complications and flatulence problems at the onset. Later years will see it have poor eyesight alongside hip and knee problems. Some dogs of this breed may also have breathing problems due to smaller than average windpipes.

As the breed is an average shedder, and having a short haired coat that is fine and smooth, it is thus quite easy to groom. Always make sure that its face is wiped with a damp cloth regularly if not daily, especially taking care to clean inside the wrinkles.

Thus we have just covered the main general information one must know when thinking of a bulldog as your future companion. You should continue your research so as to fully prepare you in taking care of this ancient dog breed so as to stave off any unpleasant situations or surprises in your life and home.
