The French bulldog has its origin in England and the intention of its development was to produce a toy variety of the English bulldog. It was developed in the nineteenth century and was very popular in among lace workers in Nottingham city. When the Industrial Revolution drove workers into France in search of better opportunities, they migrated with their dogs.

This breed did well in France and rose in popularity making it to start to be referred to as the French bulldog. The canine was later returned into England as a show dog. Hearing its new name made Brits unhappy and they complained about how a canine whose native land is Britain can be renamed like than. Nevertheless, the new name remained. Americans developed interest in the canine and the first one showcased at Westminster Kennel Club show in 1896. It was nicknamed Frenchie by the Americans. The French bulldog is small in size, but is compact and sturdy. It has a square-shaped head with a rounded forehead. The muzzle is broad and deep and has a well-defined stop. The color of noses may depends on the color of the dog in general, but they are are mostly black. Upper lips cover the lower ones and the teeth meet in an underbite position.

The coat is short and smooth. There are wrinkles forming around the shoulders and head. They come in a wide variety of colors and color mixtures including fawn, white, brindle, black, gray, and cream. A mixture of any of these colors may occur. Tails are either corkscrew or straight. It is bat-eared with the ears standing erect on the head.

A bulldog has some good qualities that please some people. First, they are affectionate, playful, alert, and simple to provide care for. They enjoy the company of people and play with kids. They are serene but moderately active when there is need. They do well with other pets like cats and other breeds of dogs.

For proper thriving, Frenchies need companion and leadership. They may become aggressive if they are treated like leaders or alphas. Also, one should not ignore them. They tend to become snappish and stubborn when they notice that their owner is passive or meek. Thus, this breed is not a perfect choice for busy people who cannot afford time for them.

It is not a very intelligent dog compared to other more intelligent breeds. However, it can be trained if one is calm and patient but firm and consistent. It may take some time before they master some skills. When they behave in unwanted manner, they should be corrected on the spot with firm, but calm talk.

Frenchies are very clean dogs. They tend to avoid puddles to stay clean. They do not know how to swim hence one should be careful when near a water body. However, those that have been trained can swim well.
