With Natural Treats For Dogs NY Owners Will Have Healthier Pets

By Mattie Knight

The vast majority of people simply love animals and millions of households have one or more beloved pets. Pets are good for people. They have a positive influence on the psychological well being of their owners and some studies have even shown that they can aid in recovery after serious illnesses. Canines, especially, are so popular because of their unconditional love towards their owners. No wonder then that when it comes to natural treats for dogs NY pet owners never settle for second best.

As much as one loves a pet it is imperative to be careful about the matter of snacks. Many pet owners think that they show their love and devotion when they keep feeding their pets snacks throughout the day. This is not healthy for the pet. Snacks should never be more than an occasional treat. Incessant snacking can indeed ruin the health of the animal.

There are numerous different ready made types of snacks on the market. Vets warn, however, that many of these snacks are harmful to the health of pets even if the pets seem to love them. Not only do they contain almost no nutrition but many types are mostly made of fats and sugars. There have been cases of popular brands banned because they contained preservatives that are dangerous.

Far too many owners of doggies think that their pets only like savoury snacks, preferably meat flavoured. This is certainly not the case. Most canines simply love fresh fruit and vegetables. Apples, carrots, cabbage in small amounts, sweet potatoes and green beans are all very popular. Chewing on fresh vegetables such as carrots not only serve as a healthy snack, but it also helps to keep the breath of the canine fresh.

Doggies love meat. Meat is not a bad snack as long as the portions are small and the meat is lean. Turkey, pork and fish are all excellent choices. Not only is meat high in protein, but it appeals to the inherent hunting instinct of the animal. Keep such snacks for special occasions, however. Meat is expensive and too much raw meat is not good for the pet.

Most canines also love eggs. One egg a week will augment the protein intake of the pet and it definitely helps to improve the health of his pelt. Eggs can be served raw or scrambled but no salt or any other substance such as oil or butter should be added. Some critics argue that eggs contain too much cholesterol but studies have shown that one every now and again is actually a very healthy snack.

There are certain snacks that canines love but that should be avoided at all cost. Chocolate and alcohol, for example, can kill. Onions, garlic and caffeine are also well loved but they are extremely dangerous and should never form part of the diet of any canine. In fact, any snack with fat and sugar should be avoided.

A beloved pet deserves a good, balanced diet. Snacks are certainly fine, as long as they are healthy and as long as they are given as an exception rather than the rule. Feeding pets snacks day in and day out is not a token of love. It is best to establish a routine and to give snacks at specific times, such as just after exercise, for example.
