By Olive Pate

Many people are pet owners. In fact, a lot of pet owners have dogs. These animals are considered close companions to humans. There are numerous breeds that are available in the modern day, including those listed in the toy group. Maltese dogs are a small breed that are considered a toy breed.

Origin and name for the breed are said to come from the Mediterranean nation known as Malta. Still, the name might refer to a defunct town in Sicily known as Melita or an island called Mijet. People who want this type of dog should learn as much as they can about this animal. This is important for ensuring that the animals are properly cared for and maintain their happiness and health.

The breed has existed for centuries, which is why its known as an ancient breed. Originally referred to as Canis Mellitaeus, this animal has had many names over the years. The origin for the name used in the modern day remains unknown. Still, this was first used during the middle of the 1960s. Maltese was settled on by the Kennel Club as the official name for the breed in the 19th century.

These dogs are known for having slightly rounded heads with a finger dome. Their button noses are black and they have brown eyes. They have drop ears that may or may not have long hair and darker skin pigmentation, known as a halo, is what gives the Maltese an expressive look. Without exposure to sunlight, the noses of these animals can become light brown or pink. This is referred to as winter nose, as they often return to black after sun exposure is increased again.

They have coats that are long and silky. They do not have an undercoat. Although some of these animals will have hair that is curly, this is considered a fault in the breed. It is expected for these animals to have a white coat with a bit of ivory coloring on the ears. In some cases, pure white coats with slight yellowing or lemon-colored marks is fine.

The breed does not normally shed, which means that it may be best for people with allergies to animals. Some might prefer these dogs with their coats short. It is common for the Maltese to have a puppy cut. This involves shaving or trimming the whole body to the same length. Adults are typically between 7 and 12 inches tall and 3 to 10 pounds in weight.

These are bred to be companions. They are extremely playful, lively and cuddly. Even as they grow older, their demeanor is expected to remain the same. Some of these dogs could be snappish with small kids and should be watched when playing. Although socializing them while they are puppies can help with reducing this problem. Sometimes these dogs suffer with separation anxiety and need to be close with their owners or other humans.

In general, these are recognized as hypoallergenic. They should be cleaned on a regular basis to ensure that they do not have stained coats. People should research to find out what is involved with owning these animals, including their care.
