Why You Might Want To Look At Doberman Pinschers For Sale

By Leslie Ball

Looking for a family dog that will guard your home while being affectionate, easy to train, and fun to live with? Look no farther than Doberman Pinschers for sale. Once considered guard dogs for things like military compounds and junkyards, these dogs are now noted for their great dispositions and suitability as family pets.

Dobermans were originally bred to be loyal, intelligent, protective, and aggressive. The man who developed this admirable breed was Herr Dobermann, a German tax collector who traveled by carriage far and wide for his job. He used a wide variety of dogs in his cross-breeding efforts, looking for obedience rather than hunting instinct, and loyalty rather than open friendliness. He had what he was looking for by 1890.

The aggressive tendency of the earlier dogs has been bred out of modern ones to a great extent, although Dobies retain this latent trait. A properly socialized dog will be friendly toward both canine and human strangers. However, they will instinctively be protective of their owners and need no specialized training to respond to dangers.

There are many good traits in this breed. They are medium-large dogs, weighing usually from 70 to 100 pounds (the females being smaller and lighter than the males). They have a short coat and shed very lightly. They are beautiful and friendly, well-suited to being an indoor, family pet.

Although many people think Dobies are ferocious, this breed actually ranks at the top of the list for suitability as a family pet. They have a great tolerance for their own children, even if kids pinch or poke when too young to know better. However, Dobies respond quickly to aggression from strangers of any age. For this reason, they should never be allowed to roam freely around a neighborhood.

As a Dobie owner, you should commit to spending a lot of time with your dog at home and in the car; they love to go wherever you go. Dobies need a lot of exercise and should be allowed to run free in dog parks or large yards when possible. Watching a Doberman run is like seeing joy in motion; they run like deer or greyhounds and obviously love every minute of it.

Dobermans have a life span of about ten years, mainly because they are prone to heart problems. Owners should provide a superior diet and lots of exercise to minimize this tendency. Ten years is not long to enjoy such a faithful companion, but it might be good for those who can't make a commitment of twenty years or more.

Anyone who wants to buy a Doberman should choose the breeder carefully, meet both parent dogs if possible, get a certificate of health from a reputable vet on any puppy or adult, and educate themselves on the best conformation for the breed.
