The Tips On How To Win Child Custody For Fathers

By Ines Flores

There is a general perception that child will always be left to the mother in case of a divorce. This is however not true, in fact, the father has equal legal rights, just as the mother when it comes to the child's custody. However, this can be so difficult, particularly in case the mother is also filing for the same, whether it is full or just a joint custody. For those who are wondering how to win child custody for fathers, here are some tips.

The most important thing is that the father plays a role in the kid support. If he is already paying for support expenses, then he should continue, however, if he is not, then it is important that he start making the payment. This could be done through informal arrangements with the mother or through the formal channels. Either way, he must keep all the documentations, including receipts and correspondence letters that can be used as evidence in the court.

The second part is to win the child's own affection. Establishing a relationship with the kid ensures that he/she approves you and prefers you for custody. There are many ways to achieve this, but the most obvious one includes maintaining a regular communication. The dad should be present in the important days for the kid such as the baptism, birthdays, sport days, and other eventful days. In addition to this, the dad should be able to take the kid out once in a while and even play with him/her.

In order to succeed in this, there is a need to have well planned visitation schedule. The regular and planned program ensures that the dad does not miss out on the important days. This includes introducing yourself to the school administration, and being in communication with the teacher.

In addition to this, the dad should attend the special days in school. These could be the educational events, religious events or just social events but they serve as evidence that father has a meaningful relationship with the kid. Some days that should not be missed include the baptisms, birthday parties, school plays, closing days, and sporting events among others.

Since the best interest of child carries the most weight in such hearing, the dad needs to have the best interest of this kid at heart. This requires that the dad proves to the court that handing over custody to the mother is not in the best interest of this kid.

It is also important that the father is well prepared to deal with the possible obstacles that may come on the way. The possible cases include the paternity test proving otherwise particularly when the two have never married, the child's own opinion being against the father, and the mother's self-interest.

There are better ways of fighting for the custody as an alternative to a full hearing. The two other options are arbitration and mediation that are less costly. However, whether this is a full hearing, mediation, or arbitration, it is very necessary that you seek the services of a well experienced lawyer to help you out as this can make a big difference.
