The Most Important Ways To Practice Baby Skin Care

By Mitchelle Smith

It is crucial that you use the right tactics when you care for your baby's skin. Given the fact that your baby's skin is very sensitive, it requires extra special attention to guard it against harsh conditions. There are tons of ways to maintain healthy skin for your baby and we will be pointing out some of the most important ones as you read on.

The lips on your baby are very important. You must take care of that along with their skin. Just as adults use lip balm as protection against the cold and sun, babies should be similarly safeguarded. The wind, sun, and also bitter cold can chap your babies' lips in just moments. To make sure that this does not happen, use petroleum jelly or lip balm to stop this from occurring. People that live in cold climates should use lip balm or petroleum jelly on their babies' lips, or just keep them inside when the weather is really bad. So continue to apply moisturizers to your babies' skin and lips when you can.

There are some natural oils that can be very therapeutic for a baby's skin. Some of these oils also work well as aromatherapy, which can help put your baby into a relaxed mood. Lavender is just one essential oil for relaxation and you can use it before you put your baby to bed.

Once in a while parents see a red patch on their baby's head and get concerned about where it came from. This is a condition named cradle cap and it is a common occurrence during the first few months of a baby's life. For some babies it can be yellowish or have a crusty condition to it. This is usually caused by an overproduction of oil by the baby's glands--it's similar to dandruff in an adult. This condition usually goes away on its own and is not serious. Rubbing an almond oil or an olive oil on the head of the baby can help clear it up a lot faster than just leaving it alone. If the condition gets worse, talk to your doctor--your baby may need a medicated shampoo or topical ointment.

Some parents will notice a red patch on their baby's head and wonder where it came from. This is a condition named cradle cap and it is a common occurrence during the first few months of a baby's life. Sometimes it can be crusty and once in a while it can appear yellowish. This is caused by an over production of oil in the baby's glands--it is kind of like when an adult gets dandruff. This is not a serious condition and will usually clear up all by itself. Rubbing an almond oil or olive oil on your baby's head can help clear it up more quickly. Sometimes the condition will become more severe and that is when your doctor might need to prescribe a medicated ointment or shampoo. Baby skin care is something all parents should be concerned with, as infants have thin and fragile skin. A newborn baby's skin is particularly sensitive so you need to make sure to follow any advice given to you by your doctor as well as keeping the guidelines in mind. Obviously you will want your baby to be as healthy as humanly possible but you also need to remember that developing skin conditions is common and most of the time they are going to go away all by themselves.
