By Claire Dowell

Divorce in Florida is the solution chosen by the residents of the state when marriage is no longer working. With the increasing divorce cases, looking up such records may take a while. Access to the records is open to the residents of the state, thus they can request it anytime they need it.

A divorce certificate is made when the marriage of a couple is no longer working and they decided to make their separation legal. Making the separation legal helps the couple to continue on with their lives normally as a person without a partner. With this, the divorcee can process transactions in the government using the certificate as proof of the separation. There are transactions that would call for a divorce certificate such as insurance related matter. Without the certificate, requests may not be processed. Some people would conduct a background check on their fianc to make sure that they are going to marry a person who is single, or legally divorced. This can prevent problems by the time they proceed with the marriage application. Also, a divorcee cannot remarry if the separation was not made legal or documented properly. Such record is also used in genealogy research. Although, it is not as important as birth and death records, if the family tree is not updated with the separation it may cause some problems in later generations.

As we all know, divorce records are considered as public documents. Being a public document means that the information displayed to the public is already controlled and limited. One would only find the names of the couples who got separation along with the date and the place where it was granted. Other sensitive information about the separation is kept private including the reasons for the divorce and legal matters such as the custody of the children and the property division. This is done for the protection of both parties.

Divorce records which are issued in the state of Florida can be obtained if it was registered from June 6, 1927. A retrieval fee of only $5 has to be paid. This fee is only applicable if one can provide the exact year when the divorce was legalized. In cases where the year of separation is unknown, one should add $2 per year that is being searched.
