Dog Chew Toys For Heavy Chewers

By Kerri Stout

Man's best friend has come a long way since ancient times when all dogs were wild, wolf-like hunters. Today, there are literally thousands of dog breeds in all shapes and sizes, boasting specific social statuses. One common and outstanding characteristic of dogs that evolution and in-breeding could not change, is their primitive, genetic need to chew.

All dogs chew for a variety of reasons. Teething puppies chew to soothe their gums. Grownup dogs chew because they are bored, stressed or lonely. No matter what the reason, chewing gives them pleasure and what's more, it's healthy for their gums and dental hygiene. All that changed through the ages, is what they chew. Modern dogs literally have a worldwide assortment of dog chew toys for heavy chewers to choose from.

A cute puppy chewing away on your favorite pair of slippers or running shoes may initially be funny, but when the puppy grows up and your bedding, furniture and children's toys constantly need to be replaced, it becomes a different ballgame. Any dog lover knows it's futile (and even cruel) to punish or overfeed a dog in trying to stop its chewing habits. Chewing is as part of their natural instincts as breathing and barking. They may be angry for being left alone at home, bored or frustrated, but mostly they chew for the sheer joy it gives them.

Having a huge choice of chew toys in every color, size, shape and texture is great, but it also burdens dog owners with the responsibility to find a product that is not only safe and healthy, but also appealing to their best friend. Many of the popular, flavored chew toys pose serious health risks due to hazardous ingredients. Going the natural way by feeding them raw animal bones can be equally risky, as the bones can splinter and rupture their stomach.

These days, there are about as many dog chews on the market as there is specially designed dog food. As with all things, they vary in price, popularity, quality and safety. The most appealing chews in the form of dolls, teddy bears and balls are not always safe. Many are made from synthetic material that is poisonous or harmful when digested, while others contain harmful chemicals, toxins, carcinogens and preservatives.

Natural chews such as bully sticks and bones normally smell and taste better, but they pose a higher risk of bacterial contamination. Some high quality products also provide valuable nutrients. They improve dental health by exercising your dog's teeth and gums while simultaneously scraping off plaque.

Some high quality products that are free of hazardous chemicals and preservatives, are made in the Himalayan mountains. It contains natural ingredients such as yak and cow milk and is available in North Whales, Pennsylvania. There is a wide selection of these products that all promote dental health and hygiene.

A good example is natural chews made from yak and cow's milk according to an old traditional recipe of the Himalayan people. These chews contain no chemicals or preservatives and can be found in North Whales, Pennsylvania. It consists of 100% natural ingredients that are both nutritional and digestible - and best of all, dogs love it!
