Deciding On The Right Baby Monitor For You And Your Family

By Erich Park

Choosing a baby monitor is not as easy as it used to be, and even just a decade ago, your options were pretty limited. If you were to look back to even just 10 years ago, you would probably find only a few choices for baby monitors which only offered a few features, but these days baby monitors can practically do just about anything (except changing your baby's diaper of course)! Some people like having a lot of options, while others find having too many choices to be intimidating, and if you are someone who gets overwhelmed by having too many options available, here are some hints that you can use to help you choose which baby monitor to buy.

Now for a lot of families, the price is naturally going to be an issue in making your decision. It is ok to have a budget; however you should not make your decision based solely on how much it will cost you. The best way to use pricing to help you choose today is to look at how many features you get for what price. Keep in mind that a system chosen solely because it is the "cheapest" may have a higher chance of malfunctioning, which is not a risk you want to be taking with your baby either. The most important thing in the end, is to simply weight out what you are actually getting for the price you are getting it at, so that you get the most value from your investment.

As you're shopping around, you'll notice many baby monitors have an operating frequency of 49 Mhz. This particular frequency will contain the greatest amount of interference - must be why they're so cheap to buy. One unusual aspect of these cheaper monitors is they pick up unwanted radio frequency signals such as cell phones and even neighboring baby monitors. But higher frequency monitors don't have those problems, plus they're easier to operate. However, you can side-step these problems by getting a monitor operating at 2.4 Ghz.

How many features are you looking for? If you are living in a small home, you may not even have room for a more extensive system, which is why you might need something more along the lines of a base station or single receiver setup. If you have more space available in your home, a system which includes multiple receivers may be a better option. If you choose a multiple receiver system, you should find one that will allow you to use the receivers for outbound communication as well as inbound. Deciding on more than one receiver can be useful if you don't always want to be carrying it around, and also is useful if you have more than one child.

Of course there is a lot to consider when purchasing a baby monitor for your family. But it all depends on how extensive you actually want your system to be and how much you want it to cost. Take your time when researching, that way you can really make an informed decision which can keep your family happy and your baby safe!
