Choosing Black Labrador Retriever Puppies For Sale In Ohio

By Kerri Stout

There are a lot of things an individual should know before taking on the responsibility of a pet, especially a purebred dog. Each breed has their own set of characteristics and it is important to select one that not only matches the owner's personality, but their lifestyle, living conditions and family situation as well. There are plenty of black Labrador retriever puppies for sale in Ohio should one decided this is the best choice for their needs.

This particular breed has been used in several dutiful positions because of their strength, intelligence and obedient nature. They have been used as hunting companions, seeing eye dogs and as valuable members of search and rescue teams. Labs not only have the discipline it takes to perform in service positions, but they are also gentle enough to be amazing family pets.

Labs are never happier than when in the company of their humans and though hyperactivity is rare, they tend to show it through excitement. Their loyalty is infamous and their naturally gentle temperament is such that they have an extreme tolerance for young children and their tendencies to play roughly. The animals will bark threatening if they sense danger to their people but it is a farce and they do not have the aggressive capabilities it takes to serve as guard dogs.

Retrieving is a natural inclination that is so prominent it became part of their name. This breed will run after balls, bones, sticks and most anything else someone will throw for them to fetch and return. It is not uncommon for these dogs to collect things they find laying around unattended and bring them to their masters.

Any sizable body of water will ignite this breeds well known affinity to swim. They get extremely excited at the prospect, especially if the love of being wet can be combined with the need to retrieve. For this reason, and because canines are not designed to lift themselves up and over a ledge, pool owners need to restrict the animal's access to it unless there are steps that will allow the pup to climb out safely.

Fully grown male Labs reach a shoulder height of around 24", with the females of the breed being just a little smaller. An average healthy weight will be in the range of 60 to 75 pounds. Their size and strong, sturdy bodies make them fit for a variety of purposes from professional level service dog to lovable and loyal family pet.

Grooming of this breed is relatively simple as they are only moderate shedders. A weekly brushing is generally enough to keep them clean and to pull out most of the loose hairs. Their oil repellent coats makes it unnecessary to bathe them unless they are involved in activities that cause them to smell offensive.

Anyone looking for a pet that is playful yet obedient, protective but not aggressive, would likely be served well by a Lab. This breed is as appropriate as a companion for adults, as well as a playmate for children. Their grooming needs are simple and when properly exercised, are not prone to restless behaviors.
