Baby Bed For Travel

By Darren Hartley

A travel baby bed becomes necessary for parents making regular overnight trips to cot-free facilities. It be worth the cost instead to buy a cheap, standard cot should the baby be most likely to stay overnight somewhere on a regular basis, such as the grandparents' house.

The playpen-sized models of a travel baby bed opens up move potential for their regular use. The problem with travel baby beds is their use for only a handful of times. In storage, they can actually take up a fair amount of space when folded. They are indeed portable but they can also be heavy to lug around.

A travel baby cot that folds flat may not be suitable for travel because it may not fold completely enough to fit the car boot. However, it could still be used as an extra cot for guest babies.

Having sides that do not drop down and mattress heights that are not adjustable, a travel baby bed may not be a perfect fit for newborns or very young babies. Light, pop-up travel carrycots may be the way to go for this younger lot. Models for these carrycots are available in most baby catalogues.

A Moses basket can be used as a travel baby bed. However, it is best to avoid carrying a baby around in it whenever possible. This is especially true for a Moses basket with handles that do not meet in the middle. A Moses basket provides no protection to the baby whatsoever in case a parent slips or trips on the stairs.

If a carrycot is to be used as a travel baby bed, it might entail the purchase of a mattress more suitable for night time sleeping. Carrycots are not as widely available as Moses baskets. A carrycot that is fairly light must be chosen so there will be no difficulty in the movement of the baby while asleep.
