Current Dangers Make It Necessary To Teach Child Abduction Awareness

By Essie Osborn

A parent has many responsibilities in our modern world. There are toxic dangers, sometimes in food, other times in water. It is one thing when the child is at home with the parent. However, when he or she starts school, safety is not always under the control of the parent. One topic that is at the forefront of the concerns of modern parents is that child abduction awareness is now a necessary part of parenting.

There are law enforcement agencies, private and public organizations and lessons taught in school to try to keep children safe from sexual predators. There are parents who lost children to these predators who campaign for safety to prevent it from happening to others.

Task forces try to publicize the dangers and also help if a child is taken. They announce the details about stranger danger to make parents and children aware. Now it seems that a predator might be a relative or close friend in addition to the stranger.

There was a time, not too long ago, when religious leaders, teachers and basketball coaches were assumed to be beyond reproach. Kids could respect those in positions of authority. It is simple to warn about strangers and the danger they may pose. But, it is quite another thing to have to suspect a pastor or priest. How can that be explained.

They can learn that a stranger may pull them into a car. He or she can be taught not to help a stranger look for a small kitten or a puppy. This can be taught, but not always remembered by a children concerned about a lost pet.

They can be instructed not to accept a ride home, even from someone they know, or is a friend of the family. The schools will not release a young child from class to anyone but the designated parent or caregiver. However, these safeguards have been tested and do not always work.

One concerned group of citizens conducted an experiment. They approached young children in a parking lot near a school. They asked if anyone would like to see their litter of puppies. They then were able to entice half of the children they approached to climb into a van to see the puppies up close.

When little children are told they will be stolen and never see their parents again, they do not fully grasp what the consequences actually are. People die on television and in movies and often return, still alive. Children do not always grasp the concept that death is forever.

Older children, teens for example, can be taught to trust their own instincts. When they are in a situation that makes them uncomfortable, they should get away any way they can. But, predators might prevent them from escaping.

Parents are told to have a picture and lock of hair ready, along with fingerprints, if their child goes missing. These things will help the police to move fast to find the child. It is important to remember the color of the clothing he or she wore to school that day. It is a sad commentary on our society that families must live in fear of being abducted while the predators enjoy freedom without worry.
