Answering The Question Will The Antichrist Be A Muslim?

By Essie Osborn

Literature about the judgment day as recorded in the Koran and the bible has led to a rift between Christians and Muslims. The interpretation of readings in the holy books has led many people to ask, will the antichrist be a Muslim? Theologians from both religions have given justifications regarding this suggestion leaving followers to make personal conclusions.

Islam carries a story of a twelfth imam who disappeared at a young age and is expected to return before judgment falls on humanity. The story indicates that Muslims were being persecuted at the time. This led the imam to flee to the desert. He is expected to return in order to fulfill his mission of birth. This return before judgment coincides with rise of the beast. The similarity in the two occurrences leads people to make the conclusion.

Christians are told to be watchful for the king whose rule comes before the Day of Judgment. Verse four in the book of revelation chapter thirteen gives this account. One promise to be made by this king is peace for Israel for a period of seven years. The promise is bound to be broken. The reign will be characterized by dictatorial stunts and anarchy. This becomes a sign of an ending world.

Signals for end times include the broken promise of peace for Israel. The beast will demand that his subjects regard him as God. He will dictate over the earth. Christians are required to be vigilante not to fall for his tricks and intrigues. The similarity between a person who reigns before end times and the return of the Imam at the same time are the issues that lead to this conclusion.

Daniel presents a different version that seems to excuse Muslims. His mention of Roman Empire makes it almost impossible for Muslims to appear in the picture. This relates to the location of this empire and the population that is dominant. These two aspects make it almost impossible to find an Islamic beast.

The location of the Roman Empire casts doubts over the antichrist coming from the Islamic world. The location of this empire is in Europe. This area has a small population of Muslims and would be unlikely to allow them to lead. Muslims are dominant in the Middle East. Their relationship with Israel would almost make it impossible to achieve the seven years of peace. This puts doubt on the proposal.

The debate around the beast is more of a theory than real possibility. For one to rule in this regard, he must find acceptance among both Muslims and Jews. A half cast between Jews and Muslims would be very acceptable. Muslims would regard him as their lost Imam while Jews would consider him their own and therefore allow him to rule.

The conclusion on the possibility of a Muslim antichrist arises out of double reading of the scripture. Christians are required to be vigilant when accepting any ruler. This ensures that they do not fall to the intrigues and deceit that will characterize the beast. Any leader must be required to proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord.
