Reasons Why Dog Obedience Training Is Essential

By Garrett McMahan

Obedience training is an excellent way to ensure that your dog is a happy, healthy and safe pet, but people often take a negative view of obedience because they don't wish to be harsh with their animal companion. The truth is that dog obedience training actually improves the bond between you and your pet and you'll enjoy your pet a great deal more if they are well-trained. If you are not convinced, read on and discover the reasons why training is an essential part of owning a dog.

One of the biggest reasons why we love having a dog as our companion is because they possess a joyful spirit and are always anxious to spend time with us. However, even if your dog is the sweetest friend you can imagine, he or she might possess a few destructive or annoying habits. For instance, perhaps your dog is an excessive barker or maybe they constantly chew up items in your house or greet all of your guests by jumping on them. Obedience training can stop these problems from occurring without altering the happy personality of your dog.

Aside from breaking bad habits, your pet's safety is one of the biggest reasons why training is essential. Your dog should follow basic commands such as sitting, staying and coming to you when told. The dog also needs to obey these commands in a variety of situations. Imagine if you are at the park and your dog somehow becomes separated from you. If he is well trained, all you must do is tell him to come to you, sit and stay. Otherwise he could get hurt by another dog or even run out into a busy street.

It is fairly easy to train a dog to sit and stay and follow other commands in your home or in your yard, but your dog needs to be trained well enough that they will obey you in situations where there are many dogs or people around. A well-trained dog that can obey a command in many conditions is a truly safe dog. In addition, you can take an obedient dog to many more places. Your friends are more likely to accept your dog into their home and there are many other places where you can bring a well-trained animal. Dogs hate to be left behind, so your well-behaved pet will love the fact that he or she can come along with you to many places.

People often balk at dog training because they confuse the idea of obedience with dominance and they simply just want to love and treasure this animal and not dominate it. However, while your intentions might be good, the outcome is not as positive. The pack mentality is instinctual for dogs and they truly long to have a leader and follow their instructions. Dog obedience training actually increases the bond and level of trust between an animal companion and its owner. Your dog will feel secure because they know how to please you and know what to expect from you.

There are many dog obedience programs on the market and some promise results in days or perhaps a one-week cure. Just like Rome wasn't built in a day, your pet won't be trained in a couple of days. It does take a few weeks of patient practice to truly train a dog. So avoid the quick-fix programs, they don't work. A training program also needs to address many obedience issues including the proper way for a dog to walk on a leash, basic obedience commands and commands to keep your animal from barking or running away. A DVD program can be a convenient way to accomplish this training on your own schedule, so check out programs such as The Dog's Way, and you will be on your way to fostering an ideal relationship between you and your beloved dog.
