Hog Waste & Some Interesting Uses For This

By Lianne Derocco

It is true that hog waste is foul smelling and dirty and annoys people but is also a fact that cannot be avoided in swine farming. Hog waste can also be of help to people however, rather than just a nuisance. Electricity can be produced using hog waste. The waste is contained and the methane gas produced by the waste is extracted and used as a source of fuel, producing electricity. Fertilizers can be made out of the waste, as well, which can help with the production of crops.

When it comes to fertilizer, swine waste must be liquefied and then it can be used on the crops. It enriches the nutrient value of the soil, which generally means that you will yield better crops. Using hog waste, as opposed to chemicals, is definitely a more environmentally friendly way to fertilize and also can be quite cost effective.

There are scientific studies currently ongoing where hog waste and other kinds of waste excreted by animals are used to produce synthetic crude oil. Breaking down the carbohydrate materials in the liquefied hog waste is the process in this scientific project in the US, using heat and pressure, and thereby producing synthetic crude oil in the process. The future appears bright for these scientific research studies. Problems of what to do with hog waste might be solved if this waste can be used as a good, inexpensive source of fuel.

There is also a process that can make hog waste produced as binding materials for asphalt. Binding materials are ultimately produced from this process, and the materials are less costly compared to petroleum based binders. The petroleum-based binder materials in asphalt are quite expensive, so using hog waste is a cheaper alternative that can lower the overall costs associated with road construction.

Of course, hog waste management is an extremely important part of the job for swine farmers. The hog waste lagoons should be fully contained because a leak can produce catastrophic effects and sources of pollutants to the groundwater. Hog waste lagoons and waste pits also should be treated and liquefied, so that there will be no solid build up on the bottom or crust at the top. Reducing these two problems also reduces problems such as foaming, odors and flies.

A natural agricultural waste product is available that can help swine producers reduce and even eliminate these concerns. Agra Sphere and Lagoon Agra Sphere are these products, and natural bacteria are used to eat away the solid waste formation in the lagoons. These are products that will prevent sludge and crust forming in the lagoons and also the foaming. Product application is easy because the products are just tossed in and mixing isn't required. These are also the natural products that help improve the nutrient value of the waste so it becomes a better fertilizer.
